Beccles 17 Norwich 11
Beccles 17 Norwich 11
Despite losing this game 17:11 Norwich secured promotion from London 3 North East with their losing bonus point and with Upminster losing to Old Brentwoods. Norwich’s losing bonus point means Cantabrigian can’t catch them either and they may well go up as the second placed side as South Woodham Ferrers have a game in hand to overhaul the two point gap.
Dougie Greenwood halted
The game was played out in bright sunshine with a stiff diagonal breeze. There was a lot of nervousness in the Norwich side, knowing what a big game this was and this translated onto the pitch. Beccles had much the better of the game until the last 20 minutes when Norwich finally woke up and started to play.
Beccles started off brightly moving the ball well across their backs and with their large pack dominating exchanges up front. Their first scoring opportunity came with a kick at goal 10 metres inside the Norwich half that Luke Wade pushed wide in the wind. Beccles continued to make good ground when they got the ball wide and were hauled down just short of the line when Norwich infringed. Beccles opted for a scrum and number 8 Robert Wilson broke from the back down the blind side. He was halted but the pressure from the ensuing rucks meant he was able to pick up again from the base and work his way round the open side to score. The kick was missed.

Norwich worked their way into Beccles territory and following a trip by flyhalf Wade, Norwich had what seemed like a straight forward kick in front but Rob Micklethwaite pulled it wide. He had another kick shortly afterwards from further out that looked to be dropping short but just had the legs to creep over the bar reducing the gap to 2 points. Which remained the score at half time.

Having less territory and possession, Norwich needed to make their time in the Beccles 22 count and yet frequently infringements and poor lineouts allowed Beccles to clear their lines. Another penetrating run by the Beccles backs allowed winger John Hoffman to score in the right corner and this time Wade landed the conversion to take the score to 17:3.
From the restart Beccles were penalised on their 22 and Rob Micklethwaite kicked the penalty. He had another chance shortly afterwards on 10 metres which was probably at the limit of his range and the diagonal wind assistance drifted the ball just wide of the right hand upright.
Norwich forwards finally started to exert some real pressure that resulted in David Byrne scoring in the left corner. JC Brown was unable to convert.

Norwich had finally found their stride and had opportunities to win the game but a couple of badly botched lineouts within the Beccles 22 released the pressure and from one of these Beccles again made good ground deep into the Norwich half. Norwich hung on for the losing bonus point that they knew would keep Cantabs at bay but as the results turned out, it was not needed and despite a disappointing performance in this game, their consistency during the long season reaped it’s own reward.

Some of the team had already left the ground before the results of the other games came through. time to celebrate together next week though.
