Mini Youth Senior
Norwich 29 Harlow 25
Norwich 29 Harlow 25
Norwich should have buried this game with 20 minutes to go but right up to the final whistle the result could have gone either way. Both sides seemed to have great difficulty in dealing with their opponents’ restarts and it was Norwich who conceded possession from the kick off. They gave away a penalty in trying to recover possession. Harlow kicked to the corner and rumbled over from the resulting lineout with prop forward David Rose getting the touchdown. Fly- half Andrew Dobson landed the conversion to give the visitors the lead after 2 minutes 7 points to nil.
Joe Riches coped well being thrown in to the hooker/thrower position following the withdrawal of Mike Hindle through injury.
Harlow coughed up possession from the restart and Norwich immediately put their opponents under pressure and were soon inside the Harlow 22 but seemed to be having difficulty in securing quality ball from their own lineout having kicked to the corner from a couple of penalties.
Jonny Wheater made some crucial breaks during the game.
After 11 minutes a lovely break by Jonny Wheater in the centre was carried on by scrum half JC Brown who put Jay O’Brien away. The right wing finished off superbly to score half way out. Rob Micklethwaite added the conversion to put Norwich on level terms. Norwich appeared to be getting on top and again after a great passage of play Lawrence Austin playing at flanker finished off a great move to score in the corner. Again Micklethwaite added the conversion to put Norwich in front 14 points to 7.
Dave Micklethwaite with plenty of company
Any thoughts that Norwich would begin to dominate were quickly dispelled when Harlow centre James Fricker waltzed through some weak Norwich tackling to score near the posts which gave Dobson a simple conversion to bring the visitors level.

Again Norwich came straight back and scored with Jordi Walker going over in the corner. Micklethwaite this time could not add the conversion but Norwich had the lead back 19-14. Not for long though as shortly before half time Dobson added a penalty and then with a superb piece of backing up went over in the left hand corner finishing off a move that Norwich seemed to have well covered. He could not add the conversion making the score at the interval 19-22 in the visitors’ favour which they deserved.
Jordi Walker with Joe Riches in support
Norwich regained the lead 5 minutes into the second half with a very well taken try from Rob Micklethwaite who turned and twisted to get over the line and then converted his own try magnificently from the touchline. However Harlow were not finished as a moment later Dobson kicked a penalty from not far short of the half way line to reduce the arrears.

Micklethwaite then added another penalty which with 25 minutes left was to be the final score of the game. Norwich dominated the rest of the game but could not add to their tally despite a Harlow yellow card. The fact that they did not score again was down to stout defence and a propensity to give away penalties at crucial times.
Ross Adnitt carries the ball on late into the game.
There was time for both kickers to miss a couple of kickable penalties. Although Harlow were barely in the Norwich half in the second half with the margin being only 4 points they knew a try would win them the game so they ran the ball at every opportunity. Fortunately the Norwich defence was solid but nonetheless they were relieved when the final whistle went on a thoroughly entertaining game with Norwich edging a bonus point win.
Mark Fernie who had an excellent game
Great to see Ben Thompson making an appearance after so long away from the game. It's a pity that, working offshore, he's not available on a regular basis.
Finally, thanks very much to the mascot and ballboys for a great job well done.
