Norwich 7 Belsize Park 59

20/11/2021

Norwich 7 Belsize Park 59

Norwich’s depleted side went down to another heavy defeat at home, this time to a well organised and disciplined Belsize Park.

The home side were very much in the contest for the first 25 minutes before falling behind. They traded early tries with the visitors as Belsize Park scored within 5 minutes when Norwich’s back line did not number up correctly providing space wide on the right for the visitors to canter in at the corner. A good conversion went over.

Norwich showed real enterprise and pressure at this time, let down too often by the blight of their afternoon, the breakdown penalty count. Despite this, on 10 minutes they went through the phases wide on the right and Dave Micklethwaite collected the ball from a ruck and sprinted to the line, passing inside to Chris Drohan to go under the posts.

As good as Norwich had been at disrupting the driving maul last week, they seemed to have forgotten how to do it this week and Belsize Park used it to good effect. From a solid lineout on the Norwich 22, the driving maul drew in defenders to halt it and this created the space out wide to go over again.
On the half hour mark Belsize scored a try down the right wing using the superior pace of their wide runners.

Norwich then seemed to switch off, as they have done numerous times this season and from an obstruction penalty, Belsize Park scored again just before half time taking the score to 7:26 at the break.

Norwich were still in the game at this point in terms of competing, even though the scoreline was getting away from them. They frequently built pressure within the visitors 22 but failed to convert it into points, one notable frustration of their season. This was summed up in one move where an excellent period of sustained pressure on the opposition 5 metre line came to and end with a knock on when a score seemed almost inevitable.

From the scrum that resulted, Belsize Park ran the ball out of defence turning the pressure and scoring from a lineout with a driving maul.

Norwich never gave up and camped on the visitors 5 metre line drawing several penalties until a really loose pass was intercepted and Belsize Park ran the full length of the pitch to score.

With two more tries scored by the visitors late into the game, the final pressure came from Norwich but once again they failed to convert it into points.
