Norwich 7 Shelford 47

11/09/2021

Norwich 7 Shelford 47

Norwich went down at home to a strong Shelford side but will be ruing missed opportunities in the first half primarily as a result of poor discipline at the breakdown and a misfiring lineout that caused their endeavours to stall.

The Norwich pack stood toe to toe with the visitors and there was little between then with Norwich disrupting several of the visitors scrums. The primary difference was the execution of Shelford that continually broke the gain line even though the Norwich tackling was much improved from the previous week.

Norwich just didn’t execute as well and didn’t string many phases together in the first half. The first 10 minutes were played out in the Shelford half and there were early signs of what was to come when promising passages of play faltered with penalties conceded by the hosts at the breakdown.

Shelford’s first foray into Norwich territory was repulsed but another penalty conceded found Norwich defending a lineout deep in their 22. Shelford patiently pounded the Norwich line and after numerous phases found a way over.

Norwich fought back and strung an encouraging period together but being awarded penalties of their own, the kicks to touch deep in their opponents didn’t benefit them as they could not secure their own lineout ball.

Shelford scored their second try on 30 minutes in a similar patient manner as they hit the gain line hard and built the phases. The visitors scored twice more before the break, firstly from a lineout in the Norwich 22 by taking the ball at pace and crashing through the Norwich defensive line to score.

The final try of the half was a simple move across the backs, using their superior pace to go over out wide making it 0:26 at halftime.

In the early minutes into the second half, another heavy score looked on the cards as Shelford battered patiently through the phases again and to score twice.

With a 0:40 deficit, Norwich finally started to apply pressure to the well organised Shelford defence and stretched them with patient phase play of their own, allowing a gap to open for Dave Micklethwaite to stroll over. Theo Elliott added the conversion.

Shelford had the last word though, following a missed tackle with a try down the left wing.

Norwich will be encouraged that their pack were a match for the bigger Shelford unit and ended the game looking quite competitive but will be frustrated with their discipline at the breakdown, inability to win their own lineout ball and not completing the opportunities they created.
