Romford & Gidea Park 33 Norwich 31
This was a game which the respective league positions of the 2 sides indicated would be close and so it was. Norwich will look back at crucial moments in the game which let them down which was a great pity because they played some super stuff at times.
Mike Lawton at full back had an opportunity to put Norwich into an early lead with a long range penalty attempt but despite getting the distance he was slightly awry . In fact it was his opposite number Jack MacVeigh who after 8 minutes put the hosts in front with a simple penalty .
Norwich then had a period of sustained pressure with the forwards picking and driving but failing to get over the line . Romford having resisted this pressure got into the Norwich half but some excellent defence kept them out with David Micklethwaite being outstanding in this department.
Norwich did not help themselves giving away needless penalties one of which for a late tackle by centre Jonty Newton saw the player get a yellow card. Shortly afterwards Romford scored a try from scrum-half Barney Savill who went over half way out which was converted by MacVeigh.
Norwich’s cause was not helped when left wing Hugo Barratt was yellow carded . Norwich recovered straightaway with a try after some great interplay which saw flanker Paul Micklethwaite score near the posts for Lawton to add the simple conversion.
Moments later after a great steal on the floor by David Micklethwaite Norwich moved the ball wide and Lawton strolled over under the posts. He added the conversion and the referee blew up for half time with Norwich in the lead 14-10.
The second half started with Norwich playing into the wind . Romford threw everything at them but Norwich’s defence was excellent. Romford coughed up the ball in the middle of the park. Chris Parrott who had replaced Barratt on the left wing broke and Newton finished the move to score near the posts . Lawton converted and Norwich were 21-10 up with 25 minutes to go.
Shortly after the restart Norwich scrum-half Robbie Bridgstock made a break and put Parrott away who would probably have scored but the referee called play back for a forward pass which appeared harsh .
MacVeigh had already reduced the arrears with a penalty when after a period of pressure Aiden Mersh for Romford got over the line for MacVeigh to add the easy conversion. With 5 minutes left Norwich gave away a penalty just inside their own half . Romford took it quickly and for once Norwich’s defence let them down and prop forward Karl Prestoe got over the line and MacVeigh added a magnificent conversion to put them 27-21 up with minutes to go.
Norwich got back into their opponents territory and were awarded a penalty which they duly kicked . This appeared to give Norwich at least a losing bonus point but again Norwich incurred the wrath of the referee and gave away 2 silly penalties which MacVeigh converted . In the dying seconds Norwich got into their opponents 22 and Newton managed to get over the line to score with Lawton adding the conversion to give Norwich 2 losing bonus points.
