Holt 50 Norwich 15

Holt 50 Norwich 15

Norwich U13s travelled to Holt on a beautiful autumn morning for a fixture thought way beyond us a few weeks ago.

It was a game of firsts for Norwich, 3 players making their debuts and the first time we've played 13 a-side on a full-size pitch with a six man contested scrum!

The Norwich boys joined Holt for the pre-match warm up - and as we only had 12 available players Holt loaned us a ‘back' for the first half. The game started as expected with Norwich on the back foot conceding a few quick tries. Slowly Norwich got a foothold in the game and pushed Holt back for a period of time and we had some valuable possession. Holt once again showed their superior passing game by running in a further three tries in the latter stages of the first half to make the score 30-0 at HT.

During the halftime team talk we picked the boys up and told them to ignore the score and go out and learn from the experience and just enjoy it. We benefitted form an extra Holt player in the second half as one of our boys picked up a minor injury - this extra bit of quality - and the HT team talk seemed to do the trick as Norwich scored three tries in the early stages of the second half without reply in a much improved display.

Holt however came on strong in the latter stages of the match as fitness took its toll on our boys and the final score was 50-15 to the home side.

The match was refereed brilliantly by one of the Holt coaches, who, understating of our boys inexperience, was very lenient towards us in some of the decisions - and very patient in setting up our scrum!

Another excellent mornings rugby and valuable game time experience for the new players, with more players now attending training the future is looking much brighter for this age group - what was pleasing for me was how the boys responded to being down at half time and put on a superb display in the second half - massive well done to all of them.

Norwich tries came from Eddie Hume (2) and Buddy Kidd with debutant Ben Jackson taking the MOTM award for a series of text book tackles - not bad for a first match!

Final score: Holt U13s 50 - Norwich U13s 15
